Toilets drive educational change in Nasik, India

LOCATIONNasik, IndiaDRIVEN BYJustin Morris

Many communities in India don't have access to proper toilet facilities. Justin Morris, Australian tradie, partnered with the Reece Grant to install 22 toilets in a rural school outside Nasik.

Project

Justin collaborated with charity We Can't Wait to help construct sanitation and toilet blocks for the boys and girls at the school, including toilets, taps and basins and soap facilities. Installing these facilities was the first step to educating and supporting the local community in personal hygiene.

Outcomes

After just one year, the school saw a 15–20% increase in enrolments from female students, with some changing from schools without toilets to enrol there. Students are spending more time at school, with absentee days reduced by 10–15%.

Something as simple as a toilet block has had a huge effect on the community.
